Phill Niblock: Disseminate (1998) for Orchestra
Drone music is basically about the tone itself becoming a physical object, instead of a mere intellectual construct. The drone can be viewed as a kind of rope, densely woven from many microtonal threads; her primary parameter is her width, while duration and general pitch-level remain fixed, from beginning to end. This one starts with a unison, on the note ‘d’, and spreads to a minor third (c#-e) over the total duration of 22 minutes. Due to the resonance of the performance space, the sounding result always remains somewhat impredictable.
