‘No fun’, for ensemble (2012)

The concept score provides a blank time chart, along with some verbal instructions, according to which each player must set up her individual part; this includes free choice of source material (within given limits), tonality, and tempo, as well as chance operations, to determine entries and exits. The first draught I conceived during a class project lesson, in a secondary school in Berlin, where the music room contained hardly any other instruments than plenty of keyboards, on which the pupils each could play one or the other popular tune. So I decided to use these tunes as source material for an experimental piece, by basically having them all played at the same time, each in a different tempo, and a different instrumental sound. Later I refined the concept, for performance by a professional ensemble.

Premiered 2018, by ensemble ‘work in progress – Berlin’, at Schloß Wartin.
