John Cage: ‘Four6’ (1992)

John Cage: ‘Four6′ raises the issue of what generally makes for a composition. According to a general understanding, a composition is basically a selection and compilation of sounds. However with this piece, the sounds are not selected by the composer; the four performers, independently of one another, select their own sounds. The music depends basically on two components: on one hand the structuring of the time period, within which the sounds are allowed to appear, and to affect one another (which is provided by the composer, in terms of time brackets), and on the other hand the actual qualities of the sounds, which are totally left up to the performers’ decision.
